“I don't have time right now.”
Also sounds like: I'm busy · I'm about to walk into a meeting · Bad time
What it usually means
Sometimes literally true, often a brush-off. Respect it, ask for a sliver of time, and if it's real, book a specific callback instead of "later".
Three ways to answer
1. Twenty seconds
“Understood. Can I take 20 seconds to say why I called, and you decide if it's worth a proper conversation?”
Why it works: Most people will give you 20 seconds; your reason has to earn the rest.
2. Specific callback
“No problem at all. Is later today better, or would Thursday morning work for five minutes?”
Why it works: Two specific times are easier to accept than an open-ended "when's good?"
3. Name the reason
“I'll be quick: I'm calling about [specific reason]. Should I call back at a better time, or is it not relevant for you?”
Why it works: Gives them enough to judge relevance, and makes saying no honest and easy.
Fill in the [brackets] with your own product, reason for calling and real customer results.
Questions worth asking
- When is a better time this week?
- Is this something you'd want to look at this quarter?
Avoid
- Launching into the pitch anyway.
- Agreeing to "call me later" without a time.
