“I'm not the right person for this.”
Also sounds like: That's not my area · You want someone else · I don't handle that
What it usually means
A gift if you handle it well: they know who is. Ask for the name and permission to mention them.
Three ways to answer
1. Ask for the referral
“Thanks for telling me. Who would own [the problem] on your side? Mind if I mention you pointed me their way?”
Why it works: An internal name, used with permission, makes the next call warm.
2. Check influence
“Got it. Would you still have a say in it, or is it entirely their call?”
Why it works: People with your prospect's title are often influencers; find out before you go around them.
3. Make it easy
“No problem. What's the best way to reach them, email or phone?”
Why it works: A small, concrete question is easy to answer on the way off the phone.
Fill in the [brackets] with your own product, reason for calling and real customer results.
Questions worth asking
- Who would make the decision?
- How do they usually like to be contacted?
Avoid
- Hanging up without a name.
- Dropping their name without asking first.
