“What is this regarding?”
Also sounds like: Who's calling? · What's it about? · Can I tell them what this is for?
What it usually means
Usually a gatekeeper screening calls. Be clear, brief and specific. Vague answers get screened out; honest specific ones often get put through.
Three ways to answer
1. Clear and specific
“Sure, it's [Your Name] from [Your Company], about [specific reason for calling them]. Is [prospect] the best person for that?”
Why it works: Specific reasons sound legitimate; checking the person turns the gatekeeper into a guide.
2. Ask for help
“It's about [the problem] for your [team]. Who on your side would handle that?”
Why it works: Gatekeepers often know exactly who owns what, and will tell you if you ask.
3. Best time
“Thanks for asking. It's [reason]. When is [prospect] usually easiest to reach?”
Why it works: Even if you don't get through, you leave with the best time to call.
Fill in the [brackets] with your own product, reason for calling and real customer results.
Questions worth asking
- Who else works on [the problem]?
- Is email or phone better for them?
Avoid
- Pretending to know the prospect personally.
- Being evasive. It gets you screened out.
